Almost Doesn’t Count

Part One: Almost Doesn’t Count
As she looked around she realized she was in a Karoke Club, a place no one would ever catch her in. The weirder thing was who was with her. Rory, Dean, Lane, and Sookie were there too. Rory was pretty much attached to her in the first place so that wasn’t a suprise, and Dean and Rory had been attached to each other since their romantic Chilton sidewalk moment. Lane wasn’t that weird either since she was like a daughter to her, and Sookie was her best friend. No, the weird person was the one walking up to the microphone. Luke? SINGING?!?! She just sat there in awe. Luke Danes would be the last person in the world to have gone to a Karoke Club and sang with witness able to recognize him there. Not wanting to ruin the chance to hear Luke sing she sat quietly and listened.
Luke had chosen to sing "Almost Doesn’t Count", by Mark Wills. As the lyrics appeared on the screen, Luke sang them. He was a little bad at the beginning but slowly he picked up the tune and it sounded wonderful. "Luke can sing" she thought, " Luke can sing good". Then she heard the lyrics.
Almost made you love me
Almost made you cry
Almost made you happy baby
Didn't I didn't I
You almost had me thinkin'
You turned around
Everybody knows
Almost doesn't count
Almost heard you saying
You were finally free
What was always missing for you baby
You'd found it in me
But you can't get to heaven
Half off the ground
Everybody knows
Almost doesn't count
I can't keep lovin' you
One foot outside the door
I hear a funny hesitation
Of a heart that's never really sure
Can't keep on tryin'
If you're looking for more
Than all that I could give you
Than what you came here for
As he continued to sing, she thought " Oh no, he’s singing about Rachel. Oh no, he isn’t over her."
Maybe you'll be sorry
Maybe you'll be cold
Maybe you'll come runnin' back
From the cruel cruel world
You almost convince me
You're gonna stick around
But everybody knows
Almost doesn't count
Maybe I'll be here
Maybe I'll see ya 'round
That's the way it goes
Almost doesn't count
As he finished, she realized that he had been staring at her the entire time. He was singing to her, he was singing about her.
Luke loved her!
She knew she didn’t leave him, but in a way she did. She left him for Max. Then she noticed who wasn’t there, with her and her closet friends. Where was Max Medina?
Lorelai woke up in a jolt. Her dream wasn’t scary, it was just confusing. She looked at her kitty clock and groaned when it read 1:00 am. She had to talk to someone, but it was a school night so she couldn’t wake up Rory. She didn’t even dare to call Sookie, cause she knew it would end in endless teasing.
Carefully she got out of bed, and put on clothes. She quietly walked down the stairs and out the door. Lorelai thought a nice walk around town would help her think things out.
Possessed by a power of their own, her feet led her to Luke’s Diner. She knew he was asleep but her hand, possessed by the same power, banged on the door. A groggy, "just woke up" version of Luke appeared at the door. At first he was annoyed but when he saw that who was waking him up in the middle of the night, he ran to the door.
"Lorelai, what’s wrong? Is Rory okay, is she hurt, are you hurt, what happened?" he asked franticly
" Everything’s okay, I just couldn’t sleep and I wanted to talk and I wanted coffee." she said shakily.
" Coffee will keep you up all night, and Rory and you could have talked in the morning, now tell me the truth, what’s wrong?"
" I need to ask you a question."
" You woke me up at 1:30 in the morning to ask me a question?"
" Yes."
"What’s the question?"
"Why did Rachel leave?"
"Lorelai, umm, she left because…."He said, not knowing how to answer.
" Did she leave because she thought… knew that you liked another woman?" Lorelai interrupted.
Luke just shook his head
" Was that… did she think… Do you love me? I mean I know you love me, we’re like siblings. But Do you love me?" she asked shakily.
All he could do was stare at her.
"You love me." She said, she finally saw it, and she finally realized what she had been hiding too. " I love you, too."
Luke just stared at her, a smile growing on his handsome face. Then he grabbed her and they kissed, a long, sweet, wonderful kiss.

Part 2: Telling Daisy Boy
Rory hurried to the phone, thinking it was Dean.
"Hello?" she said
" Hi Rory, this is Max, is Lorelai awake?" Max answered.
" Umm… let me check."
Rory ran up stairs to her mom’s room to wake her up. Still holding the phone, she woke her mom up and told her that "her Max" was waiting.
"Oh CRUD!" Lorelai thought " how am I going to tell him that after a weird social event in my dreams last night which he neglected to attend, I fell in love with my major coffee producer and close friend."
" Hi honey, sorry for waking you." Max said sweetly.
" Uh hi." Lorelai said uncomfortably.
" So" Max continued, "how about we meet up for coffee after school gets out?"
" Sounds great. Well got to go bye" and she hung up. I’ll tell him then, but first off to coffee boy.
" Hey hon… we need to talk after school, so why don’t we meet at Luke’s later?" Lorelai said.
"K." was all Rory could say as she ran out the door to catch her bus.
Luke’s Diner:
Luke’s day had started out so wonderfully. He walked Lorelai home at 2 o’clock and tried unsuccessfully to get more sleep. But he didn’t care. He loved today. His smile grew more as he saw Lorelai walk into the diner.
" Hey didn’t I see you earlier?" Luke said sweetly.
" Hey Luke, guess what’s on my agenda this afternoon?" Lorelai said angrily.
" Umm… what about a romantic dinner here with me, I’ll close up early and I’ll walk you home when we’re done." He said wondering if it would make whatever she had to do seem less horrible.
" Sounds great, but first I have to break up with my other boyfriend, I’m meeting him in Hartford for coffee and I’m telling him no." Lorelai said quickly.
" Oh Lorilie, I’m sorry, why don’t we reschedule." He said somberly.
" NO. I’m meeting Rory here after the breakup. I’ll see you then and you’ll tell me when to show up, k?" she said sweetly.
"Okay"
" Well I’ve got to go so… bye"
" Bye…. And Lorilie, I love you" he said quietly before she got up.
" Same here, Luke. Bye"
He stared at her as she left for the inn. "She is so beautiful, and she loves me" he thought as he started planing the evening.
Independence Inn:
" Hey Sookie, where’s coffee?" Lorilie asked as she entered the kitchen.
"In the coffee pot" Sookie replied
" Guess what?" Lorilie said slyly
"What?"
" I’m saying no"
"WHAT?"
Lorilie then told her about the dream and the events on Luke’s porch. After Sookie screamed, Lorilie reminded her that Rory didn’t know so she didn’t want anyone else in town to know. Lorilie went to see what was making Michel mad today.
Coffee House in Hartford:
" Hey Lorilie." Max Medina said to his girlfriend.
" Hey Max." Lorilie said uncomfortably
" What’s up?"
" Umm… Max about the proposal?"
"Yeah." Max said hopefully.
" I’m sorry I can’t marry you."
"Oh okay well…. Umm…."
" I’ve fallen in love with someone else, Max, we have to break up." Lorilie said quickly.
" It’s Luke isn’t it?" Max said angrily.
" I’ve got to go, bye Max" Lorilie said as tears fell down her cheek
" Bye" said Max, staring at her as she drove off. " Luke is very lucky to have you, he better know that."
Luke’s Diner:
" Where’s my mom?" Rory said, as she sat down at the counter.
" She must not be back from Hartford yet," said Luke, not paying attention to anything but the mental list about what he would need for tonight.
" Why was she going to Hartford? " Rory asked, confused.
" Umm… there’s Lorilie." Luke said, thankfully that she was coming into the diner at that moment.
" Mom why were you at Hartford?" Rory said, still confused on why Luke knew her mother’s whereabouts better than she did.
" Umm… met Max there." Lorilie said staring at Luke, " how did I not realize how cute he was?" she thought.
" What did you say to him?"
" I told him no."
" Are you dating him?"
"No. We broke up"
" What happened?" said Rory, noticing how her mother was still staring at Luke. " YOU AND LUKE ARE…. ARE…."She screamed.
"Yep. We’re together." Lorilie said " I’ll tell you what happened while I get dressed. Oh Luke when do I need to get here?"
" Seven" he said as she left. "Okay everyone out, I’m closing"

Part Three: First Date
Gilmore House:
"You know I think this was a good idea, mom" Rory said trying to reassure her mom for the hundredth time. "You’ve only asked me about 1,000 times."
Rory sat on Lorelai’s bed as her mom put on make up and jewelry. She could tell how happy her mom was about the recent even its, but they both new what mattered to Lorelai was how Rory felt. And Rory couldn’t be happier.
"So you’re okay with this?" asked a very happy and nervous Lorelai.
"YES!!!"said Rory "Now go before anyone else stops by or calls to see if the rumor is true."
With that they both burst out laughing. Lorelai, Luke, Rory, and Sookie weren’t the only ones thrilled with the new arrangement, the whole town was happy. So far, Rory had to answer 13 phone calls, 8 people came to their house and 3 people asked them on their way home. Lorelai knew she and Luke would be met by tons of townspeople on their way to her house, but she didn’t care. She was just too happy to care.
"Well, I think I’m ready. Lets go."said Lorelai excitedly.
Luke’s Diner:
" Well I think I’m ready," said a very tired and nervous Luke.
The blinds to the diner were closed to prevent as much of the town’s paparazzi as possible. All the lights were off. The only sources of light were the strings of Christmas lights he had strung around the diner and the three candles lit on the table. Also he had spread rose petals on the floor leading from the door to the table. He had gotten strange looks from the cashier when he bought the lights and roses. They all just knew him to be manly, definitely not romantic. He hadn’t even done something like this for Rachel. As a finishing touch he was wearing the suit that Lorelai had bought him. He also wasn’t wearing a cap.
" I must love her," he thought as he looked at the beautiful, expensive silver bracelet he had gotten her earlier that morning. It was simple, but beautiful, just like their relationship. It was just a silver chain twisted in a weird way. "Weird, yep definitely our relationship."
He smiled as the thought passed through his mind. He tensed up a little as Lorelai knocked on the door.
Slowly he opened the door and invited her in. She stepped inside and stared at her surroundings, while he stared at her. Lorelai was wearing a red velvet sleeveless that stopped at mid thigh.
" You look beautiful" was all Luke could say.
" Luke, you didn’t have to do all this for me. Aww, Luke you aren’t even wearing flannel or your cap. Luke!" Lorelai rambled.
" I wanted to. I love you." Luke said sweetly.
" I love you, too." She said as Luke led her to the table. " Luke!" she screamed as she saw the bracelet. " Why did you. I didn’t get you…"
" I don’t care, and yes you did. You gave me a chance to date the girl of my dreams."
"Aww!" she squealed. " Luke, I have a question."
" I like your questions."
"Why 3 candles?"
"Well I guess I thought most people have two because of each person in the relationship, but we have three people, you, me and Rory, in our relationship. So… three candles."
"Aww." She squealed as she got up to kiss him.
The rest of the dinner went smoothly and the walk home was beautiful. And Saturday they got to read about it in the town paper. They didn’t care. They were in love. Now Lorelai’s dreams consisted of one thing: their wedding.
The End
